When it comes to fishing in Norway, especially in varying weather conditions, it's crucial to have appropriate clothing to stay comfortable and safe. The weather can be unpredictable, with rain, wind, and cold temperatures. Being wet and cold during your stay isn't the memory that you'd like to leave with, here's a basic kit list for fishing clothing in Norway:
If you're planning on visiting in the middle of summer, a lot of these items wont be necessary. Norway's summer temperatures average 16-18° with highs ranging from 25-30°.
Waterproof Jacket: A high-quality, breathable, and waterproof jacket is essential to keep you dry in case of rain or splashes.
Waterproof trousers: Consider durable, waterproof trousers to protect yourself from rain and to stay dry when near water.
Layered Clothing:
Base Layer: Moisture-wicking base layers help regulate body temperature. Consider both tops and bottoms.
Insulating Layer: Fleece or insulated jackets provide warmth, even in wet conditions.
Mid-Layer: Depending on the weather, a mid-layer like a softshell jacket can be versatile.
Headwear:
Waterproof Hat: A hat with a brim or a waterproof cap can keep rain off your face.
Buff or Neck Gaiter: Protect your neck and face from wind and cold.
Gloves:
Waterproof Gloves: Keep your hands dry in wet conditions.
Insulated Gloves: For colder days, insulated gloves can provide additional warmth.
Footwear:
Waterproof Boots: Sturdy, waterproof boots with good traction are essential, especially if you're fishing along the shores or in wet conditions, studded during the winter months is essential.
Warm Socks: Insulating socks help keep your feet warm.
Here at Nordic Shore Fishing we've got most of the things that you could need, available to hire or to buy, as a lot of people would rather not leave their prized beach caster to its fate in a plane's cargo hold.
You might still prefer to bring your own though, so here's a list of what we'd recommend. If you do decide to visit and want to bring as little as possible, please note that we don't have any reels available.
Reels - A beach caster and spinning reel depending on the type of fishing you plan on doing, both loaded with braid - 40lb for the beach caster with a tapered mono leader, and 20lb on the spinning reel with a short rubbing leader. ( braid available in the tackle shop )
We find Penn spinfisher fixed spool reels adequate for the areas fished, 2 minimum, but bring a spare if you can. 6500 size for the beach and 4500 for spinning. If you prefer to use a multiplier a Penn 525 or Fathom are ideal.
Rods - If you decide to bring your own rods, we'd recommend a rod bazuka, be aware though that more people are being asked to open them at check in to show the contents, so be sure to bring a roll of tape with you if there's anything that might need to be re-secured after opening.
Quite a personal choice, so bring what you're comfortable with, nothing super stiff required, if it's capable of casting 6oz plus bait it will be adequate.
Our beach hire rods are the Zulcron XGT14, they allow you to feel and play the fish for maximum enjoyment and have been well tested in Norway. We also have a few Century models if you'd prefer something a bit heavier. Our spinning rods are 8ft ugly sticks.
Tackle - The usual items and a small tackle box that will fit into a suitcase. Drop us an email or Whatsapp for more details of what you may need, or bring the minimum as we have a full range of everything that you will need available in the shop.
Flask - for tea / coffee during the day.
Headlamp and charger - Depending on the time of year that you visit this may be your most used item or not used at all !
Selection of lures - Soft rubbers and / or metal. Also available in the tackle shop.
Leads - 5-7oz with and without grippers and smaller flat leads if targeting species like plaice.
Bait knife
Disgorgers
Filleting knife and sharpener
Small cutting board
A small insulated cool box if you want to bring back fillets - currently a 3kg per person limit.
Food - Snacks and meals ( check online for what's allowed to be taken into Norway ). Plus food available to buy from the local shop. Also no problem to drive out to larger stores for occasional supplies.
Phone charger
Travel plug adapter - UK to EU 2 pin.
Insect repellent
Sun cream
We use Norwegian Airlines and travel from Gatwick ( LGW ) to Trondheim ( TRD ). The flight time is a little over 2 hours. When you book your flights have a look at their fare calendar.
